ROMANTIC CHALKIDA TRIP

A marvelous trip to Chalkida

Evripos water flow direction change

The phenomenon of the tide of Evripos is unique. The waters are changing direction every six hours during an 8 minutes interval,

A maximum of 50 minutes way from the National Road, we cross over the blue waters of Evripos. The backdrop of the city at waterfront, complex and beautiful old drawbridge, looking at the "crazy water", the Fortress on the mainland side of the city, in the green forest of Karababa and a large pedestrian promenade in the center, alive, full of cafes for a leisurely cafe with sea view, fishermen, young athletes who train in canoe -kagiak.

After the Old Bridge, we turn right and then left, the road passes in front of the camp and reaches the "heart" of the city. The Folklore Museum located in three highly impressive Gothic halls to the track left over from the historic castle Negroponte against the Franks or Egrimpoz against the Turks. Traditional costumes of Evia and Skyros, religious images, the representation of a Chalkis neighborhood of the early last century and tools used in the rural life of the island, are some of the exhibits. Going down to the beach, it is an attitude to the Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi, with building time the 5th AD century and one of the oldest churches in operation in the world.

The Archaeological Museum housed in a beautiful neoclassic building, the courthouse in archaic architecture, the House of Statues with four statues -2 men and 2 women on the roof and the awesomely sculpted marble corbels, family home of composer Nikos Skalkotas (opposite the Red House), the Kriezoteio in Macedonian architecture with the fountain in the courtyard made of pieces of funerary Ottoman columns, are a few of the buildings that are left to remind the architectural wealth of the city. Finally, just to have the pleasure to find yourself in one of the most beautiful corners of the city, the peculiar property of the railway station was built in 1905 -petrochtisto the ground floor, around the neoclassical first floor, tiled with a nice clock in the middle of the first floor bother some time to go to Chalkis by bus. Or even to do a walk from there: next to the Old Bridge, is perhaps the only railway station in Greece leaving the train, you are cradled by the sea ....... Ouzo and fresh fish is a must at Halkida and Lefteris is the suitable person to handle this! As we get back to Athens, I am sure you have loved this city as much as I do

The tidal phenomenon of Chalkida

The tidal phenomenon of Chalkida, observed in the famous Evripos Channel, is a very rare phenomenon of a change of direction in the flow of the sea currents. The flow of the currents is entirely dependant on the moon and is directly connected to the duration of each lunar month. The natural flow of the current towards one direction lasts six (6) hours. Immediately afterwards follows a timeframe of approximately eight (8) minutes when the waters remain dormant. After the dormancy of those eight minutes the waters change their orientation and move in the exact opposite direction for another six (6) hours. The movements of the Moon around the Earth and those of the Earth around the Sun effect in such a way that the double attraction applied on our planet by the Sun and the Moon constantly changes direction, causing the application of forces on the earthly waters of the channel, that consequently change their direction periodically. The Sun's attractive force, despite its incomparably greater mass, is three times smaller than that of the Moon, because it is far more distant.
